After
the fire hose is dropped from harness, it is spread
open to its original, circular, open-hoop shape. The
charged hose should be clamped slowly to minimize
pressure hammer that can result in hose jacket
failure. The
nozzle is attached to the male couple on the newly
deployed 100ft. section (inside of the concentric
circle). The clamped hose can now be attached to the
new hose at the outside of its circle.
After the firefighter controls the nozzle end of
the hose lay , the clamp is released (this should be
done with the nozzle open as to allow the new line to
purge itself of air). Because the entire charged
configuration measures only 5 - 6 ft. across, and
firefighters only have to pull the hose being used
while advancing the hose lay, their work becomes much
faster even on the most unfriendly terrain.
